The History

Peace and plenty are the hallmarks which have governed the Plas Talgarth estate from its earliest days. Historical records show that Talgarth Farm was first developed in 1647 by a family named Edwards. There is a note in 'The County Families of Merionethshire' where it is apparent that some property was left to 'the Edwardses of Talgarth' in the early part of the 1600's. Humphrey Edwards began work on the Hall, or Mansion House in 1772 and it was completed in 1774 by his son Lewis. The Hall remained in the Edwards family for most of the next century, until it was sold in 1850 to the Sotheby family, founders of the famous London auction rooms.

As we understand 'Hoseasons' were renting out some of the Bungalows on the estate in the mid 1970's but it was in 1978 that Multi-Ownership & Hotels Ltd with Frank Chapman at the helm drew up the Constitution of the Club and developed the time share resort. Barratt International Resorts (BIRL) acquired the estate in the 1980's and carried on the development. With BIRL now being wholly owned by Macdonald Hotels Limited we look forward to many years of enjoyment of our resort under the management of Macdonald Resorts Ltd.

For those who are interested in the history of the local area we have published a short document 'A Little History of Pennal' - written in 1927 by Mrs M V LE Trench, it is available at Reception on the resort. For a nominal fee of £1.00, all proceeds go to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution
